So why is reading books any better than reading tweets or wall posts? Well, sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes, you need to put down your book, if only to think about what you’re reading, what you think about what you’re reading. But a book has two advantages over a tweet. First, the person who wrote it thought about it a lot more carefully. The book is the result of his solitude, his attempt to think for himself.
Hebrews 11:3 contains some support for the Day-Age view of creation. Verse 3 in the King James Version reads as follows: "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." Although this chapter is primarily about faith, we can glean some other details. The Greek word used here for "worlds" is "Aiõn", which brings to mind our English word "eon." Spiros Zodhiates says that "Aiõn; age, refers to an age or time, in contrast to (2889), referring to people or space." ", ages, in Hebrews 11:3 refers to the great occurrences which took place in the universe." (Zodhiates, page 1684) With this in mind, a better translation of Hebrews 11:3 might be: "Through faith we understand that the ages were framed by the word of God". The word "made" here in Greek is "Gínomai", and this word means "to be made or created from nothing (John 1:3, 10; Heb 11:3)" (Zodhiates, page 1700). I used to have students who bragged to me about how fast they wrote their papers. I would tell them that the great German novelist Thomas Mann said that a writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people. The best writers write much more slowly than everyone else, and the better they are, the slower they write. James Joyce wrote Ulysses, the greatest novel of the 20th century, at the rate of about a hundred words a day—half the length of the selection I read you earlier from Heart of Darkness—for seven years. T. S. Eliot, one of the greatest poets our country has ever produced, wrote about 150 pages of poetry over the course of his entire 25-year career. That’s half a page a month. So it is with any other form of thought. You do your best thinking by slowing down and concentrating.
I find for myself that my first thought is never my best thought. My first thought is always someone else’s; it’s always what I’ve already heard about the subject, always the conventional wisdom. It’s only by concentrating, sticking to the question, being patient, letting all the parts of my mind come into play, that I arrive at an original idea. By giving my brain a chance to make associations, draw connections, take me by surprise. And often even that idea doesn’t turn out to be very good. I need time to think about it, too, to make mistakes and recognize them, to make false starts and correct them, to outlast my impulses, to defeat my desire to declare the job done and move on to the next thing.
You and the members of the other service academies are in a unique position among college students, especially today. Not only do you know that you’re going to have a job when you graduate, you even know who your employer is going to be. But what happens after you fulfill your commitment to the Army? Unless you know who you are, how will you figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life? Unless you’re able to listen to yourself, to that quiet voice inside that tells you what you really care about, what you really believe in—indeed, how those things might be evolving under the pressure of your experiences. Students everywhere else agonize over these questions, and while you may not be doing so now, you are only postponing them for a few years.
In a sense, perhaps more in reading the comments than the article, I come to the same conclusion that (I believe it was) a certain Australian did already about 20 years back: There is no greater proof of Jews specialness than the grand worldwide theater of the absurd, the huge efforts spent across the planet in words and actions, to try to prove that the Jews are not special at all and have no reason to believe that they have any sort of historical mission. [Such efforts might have been more practically spent convincing the German people of such concerning themselves prior to WWI & II, wouldn’t you think?]

Thank you for the thought provoking article, and I am impressed also by the comments it has evoked. There is such a broad diversity of responses to the main message of the article–that Jews must practice and publish the principle “Love your friend as yourself!” It occurs to me that the one common denominator in all the reactions, among the various respondents, whether written outright or implied, is a longing for the implementation of love in the world between all the various religions, nations, ethnicities. In the sense that this now world-famous principle of loving one another did certainly spring from the ideological tradition outlined in this article, the Jews have been a light to the nations. We all feel the sublime beauty contained in the principle. If only we could find a way to sit as equals and focus on how to manifest this state between us, what problems could not be solved? Who cares about dogmas, customs, rules, blame, etc.; it is the state of love between us that we need because it can make a place for everyone. We would do well to study the ancient texts of the ideological tradition to brought this concept to the world and discover the method of how to make it real among us in our ordinary lives. If there is a leader(s) in the science of how to make love real in the world, I would call such a messiah. One thing is certainly clear, it is only through unity that true wisdom and peace will be established, through somehow learning how to sit together and unite above all that divides us in a way that all feel heard and respected. Anyone who knows how to lead us to this, please step forward! If we Jews have the know-how in our tradition, let us unearth it and use it to heal our fractured world. It does feel as if we are “living on a powder keg and giving off sparks.”
In response to Guy Markle. Sir you have got it wrong. Zionism is about returning to the Jews’ eternal home, it was a dream, now it is a reality. All Jews may return if they so desire. To try to equate Zionism with Nazism is a wicked transgression because Zion is in the heart, it doesn’t mean that other people should be eliminated (sic). You may say that the arabs have suffered, that’s true, but they have been fed an impossible dream, that the Jews (Israel) can be defeated and the land ‘from the river to the sea’ can be theirs again (it never was theirs in the first place, just look at history Ottoman Empire, British Mandate etc.) They have turned down offers of peace over and over again. Israel tried withdrawing from Gaza in the hope of a peaceful settlement, but we all know what happened with the rise of Hamas. So Mr Markle I suggest you educate yourself on the subject before commenting.
There are ways to deal with this problem, and no, it does not include another round of mythological ‘holocausting’. Getting rid of the fed, the 16th and 17th amendments, and shutting down all aide to israel, and for God’s sake (the real one, the Good one), stop take advice from jews on foreign and domestic policy. It is only self serving. The jew has eternally divided loyalties, and considering how bloody and violent their ideologies are, they are a threat to humanity and world peace.
I have only scratched the surface. 100 books can be written about the facts of the deeds of the ‘jews’ and why for the sake of those *facts* there would be a considerable amount if animosity directed at the jew. Zooming out, the real problem is all the ancient mythologies driving foreign and domestic policy. These jews who are so obsessed with money and power undoubtedly could care less about it all, but take advantage of it to get what they want.
