This conventional novel deals with George Bowling, an insurance-companyemployee, fat and 45, who lives in one of London's depressing suburbs with hisnagging wife and irritating children. He dreams of his past in the Englishcountryside before World War I. A windfall gives him the opportunity to returnto Lower Binfield and he is thoroughly disillusioned. The countryside has givenway to housing estates, and his favorite secret fishing pond has been drainedand is a dump for tin cans. The novel received respectable reviews. Orwell latersaid the novel which appeared in June 1939 just weeks before the outbreak ofWorld War II had been "blitzed out of existence," but it was publishedin an edition of 2,109 copies, with a second printing of 1,050 (with overs). Thesecond printing was "ordered six weeks after publication of the firstprinting." But for the outbreak of the war mighthave done better commercially.
In 1939 no American publisher wished to bring out this book. On January 19,1950, two days before Orwell died, Harcourt, Brace on the strength of Orwell'ssuccess with and publishedsimultaneously and (which on its dust jacket is billed as "George Orwell's newnovel."
