Comments on the nature of SORs and the process of writing them were interesting in the degree to which participants highlighted the way in which knowing that they were going to be asked to write a SOR had led them to evaluate what their understanding and beliefs about the relevant issue were before coming to the workshop. Most highlighted also the way in which the SOR had led them to make connections between theories of teaching and their own practice, as well as helping them to reflect on their own learning. A significant number mentioned the way in which the SOR experience had helped them to think about change and future innovations in their own teaching.

SORs also appear to have facilitated to some degree the conditions for reflective learning identified earlier, that is the development of perspective, the creation of relevance and the ownership of knowledge, and to have contributed to strategic thinking about ongoing autonomous professional development. They appear to have done this by foregrounding not only retrospective reflection on experience, but by encouraging a focus on future needs, a process which I have elsewhere termed "prospecting" (). In so doing, SORs have addressed an important developmental issue: that is the nurturing of the tendency to habitually look for learning from a variety of knowledge sources. A by-product of the process of completing and sharing SORs seems to have been the opening up of a professional dialogue between participants and tutors and between the participants themselves (SORs being shared by email). This helped to widen the knowledge sources which participants had access to, and helped to build their confidence in their own professional persona and a sense of the teacher-as-learner (lifelong learner).

Reflective Essay On Teaching Experience

The type of work we are describing here might best be described as the reflective essay on teaching

Reflective teaching means looking at what you do in the classroom, thinking about why you do it, and thinking about if it works - a process of self-observation and self-evaluation.

My teaching goals at the beginning of the semester were an amalgam of the things I had vowed never (or always) to do, based on my 17 years of experience as a student and on the education courses I had taken during my time at Swarthmore.

Despite the fact that we disagree, at least to a degree, with her estimation of the value of such research, and despite the fact that she didn't make much use of that research in the talk which followed, her talk was excellent. It began by drawing upon her own experiences in the classroom, extracted several general principles about teaching towards which those experiences tended, and concluded by offering some useful insights to her fellow teachers. She did not offer recipes for good teaching, though; her comments derived more from, and were aimed at further stimulating, careful reflection about the enterprise of teaching.

Reflective Practice in Teaching Essay 2957 Words ..

Once students have decided on a topic for the essay and the teacher has approved it, the assignment along with a rubric will be given to each student in order to provide him/her with a structured guide so as to ease into the writing process.

Writing assignments should always be given to the students in writing with clear guidelines as to eliminate any confusion. Along with the assignment, as mentioned above, should appear a clear rubric so that the students may evaluate their own work prior to handing it in for a grade. This is not only fair, but gives the student an additional set of guidelines to refer to. Soven notes the importance of clear written assignments as well as rubrics. Rubrics have a double advantage for the teacher, as Soven notes: “These descriptions (rubrics for A-F papers) acknowledge the difficulty of devising a mechanical formula for assigning grades. Each description tries to account for a range of writing that can receive the same grade” (121).

Shown below is a reflective essay assignment. The rubric appears in Appendix B, p. 25. This rubric would be given to the participating students.

The Reflective essay assignment
Read the following quotes by reflective essay writer, Margaret Laurence:

“When one thinks of the influence of a place on one’s writing, two aspects come to mind. First, the physical presence of the place itself—its geography, its appearance. Second, the people. For me, the second aspect of environment is the most important, although in everything I have written which is set in Canada, whether or not actually set in Manitoba, somewhere some of my memories of the physical appearance of the prairies come in. I had, as a child and as an adolescent, ambiguous feelings about the prairies. I still have them, although they no longer bother me. I wanted then to get out of the small town and go far away, and yet I felt the protectiveness of that atmosphere, too. I felt the loneliness and the isolation of the land itself, and yet I always considered southern Manitoba to be very beautiful, and I still do. I doubt if I will ever live there again, but those poplar bluffs and the blackness of that soil and the way in which the sky is open from one side of the horizon to the other—these are things I will carry inside my skull for as long as I live, with the vividness of recall that only our first home can have for us.”

The search for a supplementary reflective tool was based on the assumption, therefore, that many learners are not naturally reflective and so need support if they are to develop their reflective skills, and that educators need to provide what has been termed 'scaffolded reflection opportunities' (). Such support is intended to enable learners to achieve a reflective output which is qualitatively superior, and which includes an element of self-discovery (). This was an outcome which the literature suggested could best be achieved through a process of distancing the self from the event or experience (temporally and intellectually) in order to help develop 'perspective', to promote an ability to look for learning and to 'take ownership' of knowledge, which helps to make learning relevant to an individual's needs (; ; ). A reflective tool which seemed to have the potential to meet these conditions and to enable participants to address the knowledge they had gained through teaching and learning activities and the process by which it came to be acquired was a specific reflective tool: the Statement of Relevance.

Our final thoughts on her comments were that while we found them extraordinarily valuable, they did not fall easily into one of the two major categories of work on teaching and learning in higher eduaction. That large body of literature tends to divide, very roughly, into two broad categories: practical guides to teaching, or planning teaching, or evaluating teaching; and quantitative social science research on teaching and learning, produced by specialized researchers in higher education, or cognitive psychology, or developmental psychology, or some such related field. Both of these categories of material can be extremely valuable, but the most interesting thing about their separation into these two types is the disjunction which sometimes arises between them.
