Because we are such a part of what we write, it can be difficult to step outside our work and view it critically. When you seek outside opinions, you can break free of the isolation and absorption of writing and receive perspectives and insights that you may have otherwise missed. You are no longer left wondering whether you followed the guidelines of the assignment, whether your structure and language are clear, etc. By asking for feedback from other people, you are taking essential measures to improve your writing and to develop as a writer.
Better writing begins with better writers. Whether you're working on a Writing 121 essay, an English 122 literary analysis or a lab report for a physics class, we want to help you improve the quality of your writing. But we know that in order to produce good writing, writers must understand the task at hand and must understand that writing is a process. Good writers aren't just born that way. Most all writers, regardless of experience, must have someone they can talk to about their writing-someone who can relate to the joys writing can bring, as well as the struggles, and someone who won't judge them or take over and do it for them. The LCC Writing Center is committed to providing high quality one-on-one writing assistance to students in all areas of the curriculum. Our Writing Assistants can help LCC students at any stage of their writing. From brainstorming to outlining to final drafting, we provide meaningful feedback on content, organization, style and mechanics. A writing consultation is a 40-minute conversation between a writer and a consultant. Together, they set the agenda for the session based on the writer’s goals and concerns, read and discuss the work in progress, and collaborate to reach the writer’s goals. Consultants work with writers at any stage of the writer’s process, such as brainstorming and organizing ideas, developing a thesis statement or line of argument, creating cohesive paragraphs, revising sentences, and documenting sources. A consultation is often focused on a specific assignment or writing task, with the goal of supporting writers as they develop more effective and productive writing strategies to apply to future writing projects.
