After discussing the matter with the class, I concluded that I disagree with David, as even though Orwell does indeed employ a heavy use of rhetoric throughout his essays, emphasising the need to be clear, he states on numerous occasions that he is a “victim of these methods.” Yet, I find that in order for Orwell to clearly communicate to the masses and to encourage this lingual clarity, he must occasionally manifest the political writing style which he has been inadvertently opposing, as his audience live in a world indoctrinated with “prose that is like a window pane” smeared with politics, void of individual thought....
But going by the traditional practice at the secondary school level in El Centro Elementary School District, there are indications that Literature and English Language are treated as two separate school subjects....
Special mention should also be made about the contribution of Indian women writers in English towards the identity formation of India with regard to their poignant novels.
One other variation on this subject is the haiku in which the break occurs in the middle of the second line. Often one finds this in translations of Basho's haikai taken out of context from a renga. Basically you have a two-liner set into three lines. Occasionally one will find an English haiku written in this manner. Again, it is often 'rescued' out of a renga or written by people using 5-7-5 syllable count who end up with too many images as in this example from edited by Helen Chenoweth in 1966 who wrote:
In this respect, English literature of the Renaissance may be seen as a refinement of its earlier works, helped in part by the collapse of the universal church and the rebirth of Greek and Roman ideas.
The major at UGA is perfect for students who enjoy reading and analyzing literature, but especially those curious about other languages and cultures with interests in global studies, international relations, or foreign language. The curriculum focuses on literary genres, periods, themes, and broadly on the materials of literature itself—structure, rhetoric, or language. Courses are offered in literature and culture of Europe and America, China, Japan, Korea, and East and West Africa with language courses available in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Swahili, Vietnamese, and Yoruba. Students are regularly presented with analytical questions such as 'What does the Japanese novel have to do with the English novel or the Russian novel?' or 'What connects literature with visual art?'.
Each area of emphasis pays equal attention to the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Graduates should be able to read diverse texts in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, with little external help except from dictionaries, and should also be able to express ideas about complex social and literary issues orally and in writing.

We live in a global society where languages, literatures, and cultures intersect; it is more important than ever to broaden our scope beyond the English-speaking world. Comparative Literature is the study of common features in the literatures and traditions of more than one culture.
Nowadays, if Mom doesn't ever serve fish for dinner atleast the kids get a taste of haiku in grade school. For mostof us, our first introduction came from reading translationsfrom the Japanese which is a bit like comparing sushi tofrozen fish sticks. Even with the knowledge of the exotic, most poets remain solidly with the meat and potatoes ofEnglish literature. It often isn't until we get older that weaccept the simple goodness and benefits of fish, adding themto the menu a little more often; maybe even buying abook.
When encouraging writers to resume the use of metaphor, Iam not suggesting the metaphor be selected and used in theconventional English literature tradition. Part of thedelight and popularity of haiku is the learning of new, andfor Western writers, unusual methods of stating the metaphorsthat come with our inspiration.
